Or were we just simply unfortunate enough to witness this spectacle unfold?

The earthquake struck without warning, destroying entire towns in its sweep. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Awful Day Ever
It all started with an case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look decent. As I was running out the door, I trippedon and with a thud all over the floor. To make matters worse, I was totally running behind for a very important appointment.
I arrived. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was just as bad. Everything. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to scream into a pillow.
